Commemoration of the Passion of Christ

On this day, we remember how He willingly chose to carry His cross, despite being severely beaten and abused. We remember how He wore a crown of thorns, causing Him excruciating pain. We remember how He was crucified on a wooden cross, without being separated from His flesh, all for the sake of our salvation.

We remember how He descended into hell and saved the souls of the prisoners. This is a reminder of the depth of His love for us, and the lengths that He was willing to go to save us from our sin and death.

 

Feast of the Annunciation

The Feast of the Annunciation will fall on April 7, 2023.
 
The Feast of the Annunciation commemorates the moment when the Archangel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary to announce that she had been chosen to bear the Son of God.
 
The day is significant not only because it marks the conception of Jesus Christ, but also because it represents the moment when humanity was offered the opportunity for salvation through the Incarnation of the Word of God. The Feast of the Annunciation is therefore a celebration of hope and new beginnings.

Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday

This year, Palm Sunday will take place on April 9, 2023.

Palm Sunday is a significant day in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church calendar as it's known as "the Entrance of our Lord into Jerusalem". We remember His arrival in the city, where He was greeted by crowds of people waving palm branches and shouting, "Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!"

It also marks the beginning of a week-long journey that culminates in the celebration of His resurrection. It is a time of reflection, repentance, and joyful celebration, and it serves as a reminder of the profound love and sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church is one of the oldest Christain denomination in the world, with roots dating back to the first century AD.  On the eve of major holidays, the Church holds special services known as vigils that are filled with prayers and hymns.

These hymns are chanted in Ge'ez, the ancient liturgical language of Ethiopia, and are known for their beautiful melodies and poetic language. They are also a powerful expression of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church's faith.

Holy Liturgy
Holy Liturgy

After the hymns have been chanted, the Holy Liturgy takes place. The Liturgy is a sacred service that includes prayers, readings from the Bible, and the Holy Communion.
